When I look at my hands I can see, okay my hands of course. But I can see bones, veins, skin as well. I can see nerves, blood, cells. Mitochondria and DNA. It is amazing, like a 3-D X-Ray of my body. The knowledge I have about biology and the poor knowledge I have about medicine enables me to see so.
In a nutshell: My body is not more than a 67 Kilogram-machine – not more.
So, I am convinced that life as such is worthless.
What is life anyway?
Life is something that reproduces itself faster than the environment can destroy it, and that is able to adapt to a change in environmental conditions.
There is no need for a spark or something from "god". There is no need for carbon-based molecules or phosphorus. A computer-virus can be life.
In my opinion, the most interesting characteristic about DNA and RNA is that these large molecules can keep up their structural integrity in a toxic environment and even duplicate themselves.
What we usually take for “life”: the mighty moose, the mighty mouse or maybe the mighty, mighty maple tree depends on several conditions like water, oxygen or sunlight and a temperature around 20° Celsius. All these factors limit the “life”-space. But there are, even here on planet earth ecological niches with autotrophic life forms. I am talking about bacteria living in Black smokers. Life forms who gain their energy from processing sulfur. When there are, even here on earth - with all these dominating organisms – niches for other kinds of life, why shall there not be other kinds of life far out there?
I like that idea. Earth is no unique place, the only planet with “life” on it. No, even when we one day blow up this big rock, there is still life left in universe.
Even under the presumption that earth was the only place where all factors came together to create life in the first place – the universe is long since infected with life.
Years ago, there were parts from the surveyor space-probe brought back to earth, on its surface there were bacteria. Back after two years in space they were still alive and began reproducing! The Voyager spacecrafts are the HPV of space.
Life is just a chemical process and nothing special or unique. Life has no meaning.
