Merry Tag der Deutschen Einheit to you!
Well, it´s supposed to be
like July 14th for the French or 4th of July/ for you folks. But
it´s not. Its made up and rather gay.
You know, the National Holyday
of the former GDR - the communist part of Germany - used to be October 7th. The
Berlin Wall came down on November 9th 1989. It took them not even a
year to put these two states together. Eventually, they didn´t want the
GDR to exist for 41 years (Oct. 7) so (Western-)German politicians
decided to reunite both states four days before that date - on October 3rd 1990. Hence the "TdDtE"
It´s
a bloodless, made-up, fake-National-Holyday with no meaning to the people at
all. Just some politician´s power games. You remember your time in
Leipzig? In November you went to the "Lichtfest". Thousands and thousands of people celebrating the peaceful revolution in a hard-ass
communist country. 11/9 that´s the date, that moves people. When you can
go out on the street and see tears in the eyes of what we call Germans.
And isn´t it a good thing? After two almost won worldwars, 40
years of communism and cold war, that the Germanz finally got their shit
together: and decided:
We are the people!
We are one people (okay, that´s quite a crooked translation...)
Wir sind das Volk!
Wir sind ein Volk
Well, so much concerning that matter...where was I ... oh: Hello!
